A simple idea inspired by a beautiful photo and with the insight of a beautiful soul was all it took to plant the seed.
I love books, in particular children’s books and I had already started doing book reviews and posting via social media. In conversation with someone close to me, I mentioned how much I would love to retire and run a mobile library, one that could bring books to children who did not have access. This lovely human being suggested that I open a Little Free Library and this idea was born.
I consulted with a local carpenter and we discussed and shared design ideas, lots of thoughts flying back and forth. I sourced locations, asking friends and the community I live in, receiving yes’s from many. I wanted the libraries to be functional but also beautiful and so I brought an artist and logo design person on board.
My first Little Free Library opened on January 13th 2025, placed at Riverbend Housing Coop and named Jayne’s Book Bridge, Riverbend Library for Children. The dream was alive, the baby was born, the adventure began.
The daisies - you will see on all of my libraries a daisy, you will see it on the stickers I put on my books and the stamps I put inside my books, but why daisies? The daisies are a nod to my favourite movie “You’ve Got Mail”. In this movie, the protagonist (Kathleen Kelly) owns a children’s book store (The Shop Around the Corner) and her favourite flower is a daisy. She quotes “They’re so friendly. Don’t you think daisies are the friendliest flower?”. This phrase just stuck with me, I loved it and I love daisies, they make me happy.
